The AOC free trial is broken

Posted in Uncategorized on April 21, 2009 by pizzamancer

Do you play Age of Conan?  I looked forward to this game for a few reasons.  I like PvP, and I loved the Conan movies, so I really thought this game was for me.  Sadly the servers were desolate, and the average mental age of the others players seemed to be about 12.  They have a great mentoring system that underutilized, and basically broken as wellfor the sole reason that people don’t understand how to use it.

My rant today is not about game playability though, it is about the free trial they have spammed all over the internet.  I saw it on eurogamer, and though I mgiht give the game a second try.  No such luck.  I still have the game installed, but in order to get the free trial, I need to install another ‘broken’ version of the game.  No trades, and a few other things.

Again, I paid $50 for the game and still ghave it installed, why the heck would I want to download a few gigs of game again?  There is no way to get the free trial otherwise.  They might as well have chiseled the promo code into a huge chunk of stone and delivered it to my front door for all the good it has done me.  If you are trying to get people to play, then why not go after low hanging fruit?  Send those of us who have paid for the full game, a free 2 weeks or month of membership in an attempt to get us back.  Don’t make me jump through hurdles.

The Magic shields of Runescape

Posted in Magic Equipment with tags on March 14, 2009 by pizzamancer

Here are my picks for the 10 best shields for mage.

you can of course use any shield, but I left off anything with a magic penalty, as that would have left the list wide open to all shields.  I also limited the field to shields (but check out the honorable mentions for non-shield items that you can wield in that slot).

Also worth mentioning that all of these shields have no range penalties, making them the best range shields as well.  (Of course you can’t use a bow and shield together, but if you are training with darts/knives, this is the list to use).

The Top Ten

10.  Wooden Shield: This has the distinction of being the weakest shield in the game, but they are free.

Def Stats: Stab +4  Slash +5, Crush +3, Magic +1, Range +4.  No Att Stats.

9.  Training Shield: The stereotypical noob item.  It actually ties with the wooden shield in terms of stats and usability, as for all intents and purposes they are the same item with just a different look.

8.  Elemental Shield: For a long time this was one of the few alternatives mages had for a shield, so even though it is useless against anything but mage here, it gets a spot.

Def: +6 Magic

7.  Anti- Dragon Shield: This is easily the best F2P mage shield.  With it’s def bonus and lack of magic penalties it is quite a useful item, also a must for members when fighting dragons.

Def Stats: Stab +7  Slash +9, Crush +8, Magic +2, Range +8.  No Att Stats.

6.  Mind Shield: From Elemental Workshop 2, this shield is good if you are fighting something that uses a magic attack, but not much else.

Def: +9 Magic

5.  Mirror Shield: A necessity for some slayer tasks, this is also a cheap shield to use that has no mage penalties.

Def Stats: Stab +10  Slash +15, Crush +10, Magic +5, Range +10.  No Att Stats.

Tip: Make sure to buy this from the GE, it is about 1/2 the shop price.

4.  Broodoo Shield: These ’scary broodoo shields’ are actually not bad.  As long as you can get over the taunts of noob, they are a very cheap and effective option.

Def Stats: Stab +10,  Slash +10, Crush +15, Magic +4.  Att Stats: +3 mage.

3.  Spirit Shield: At 60k this shield is a bargain, great stats and no penalties.  It looks cool as well as being proof of having completed the hardest quest in the game.

Def Stats: Stab +39,  Slash +41, Crush +50, Magic +1, Range +45.  No Att bonus

2.   Blessed Spirit Shield: At 1/25 the price of the Arcane Spirit Shield it offers the same def stats without the magic bonus.  An affordable alternative if you are not safe spotting and need the protection.

Def Stats: Stab +53  Slash +55, Crush +173, Magic +2, Range +52.  No Att Stats.

Worth the investment?  Nope.

1.  Arcane Spirit Shield: At 113mil, this better be a great shield, and it is.

Def Stats: Stab +53  Slash +55, Crush +173, Magic +2, Range +52.  Att Stats: +20 Magic.

Why: +20 mage bonus, the best in the game.

Honorable Mention

Spectral Spirit Shield:  There is no mage bonus on this shield, but it offers the best magic defense available with no mage penalty, but at it’s current cost of 93mil, it is nothing but an item to show off your wealth.

Crystal Shield:  If you have high mage, this is also a great option.  The defensive stats are better than the Spirit Shield, and approach the enhanced spirit shields, with only a small -10 penalty.  I think it is also one of the coolest looking shields of the game.

Unholy Book: Not a shield, but this is the item of choice to use if you are safe spotting.  The initial cost is high, but since they are replaced for free it makes a great addition to any mage/range pvp outfit.

Mage’s Book:  Also not a shield, but for a long time this shield slot item had the best mage bonus of any item in the game.  It was hard to get and not too common though.  A well used mage training arena autoing program brought the supply up to the point of it being more affordable.

Square Shields:  These aren’t the best to use, but it is not widely known that they have no mage def penalty so your spells will not hit as hard as they would on an opponent using a kite shield.

So You Want to Farm?

Posted in Uncategorized on March 3, 2009 by pizzamancer

Here is a down and dirty guide to profitable farming for you.  I was asked this in a PM, and though others might like the info as well.  Here is what you do from level 1:

Buy 24 potato seeds (96gp), 4 marigolds (66gp), and 10 compost (970gp).  Buy any utensils you will need form the farmer.

Remove weeds from any farming plot and place in the compost bin.  That is 12 weeds for 156 xp.  Use the compost on all 4 plots and plant your potatoes and marigold for another 42xp.  You will have made it up to level 3 at this point.  Pay the farmer to look over your potatoes.  It costs less than 200gp (compost) and the xp is well worth it.

Now the challenge is to set a goal.  Do you want money?  XP? Herbs for herblore?  A good starting goal is 35 farming.  At that level you can plant ranarr with relatively little chance of them becoming diseased and reap some huge profits.

The easiest route to 35 farming?

Plant at least 2 areas at a time for faster farming xp.  It is passive training, so the most time is spent in preparation, and preparation for 2 areas is nearly the same as for a single one.  Explorers ring for the Fally area and cammy tele for the catherby plot is an easy route for 2 areas.

What to plant

After harvesting your first crop, add another 3 potatoes to the compost bin and make compost.  You should be making this every round for later use as payments, for your crops, or just to sell.  You will now be at level 5.  Plant two more areas with potatoes, and 2 marigolds.  These are in demand for summoning, so it is better to pick them and plant again than to use them to protect your allotments.  (Marigolds sell for almost 3k, payments only cost 180gp).

After harvesting your potatoes and marigolds again, you will be at level 10.  Now it gets interesting.  Guy some guam seeds.  They are cheap enough that you can let them die at a higher rate.  All crops tend to get diseased and die a lot more until you are at least 3 levels above the min to farm them.

At this point if you have the ectophial, you can start farming all 4 areas.  Ecto to the port P, Cabbage tele to Fally, Cammy to Catherby and then run to the Ardo plot.

One trip to the 4 areas planting cabbage, marigold, and guam will net about 2,400xp, do that twice and you will be up to level 22.

Now you can plant sweet corn, a very profitable farming product.  Seeds cost 455 (1365 an allotment), and the produce sells well for a profit.  Make yourself some scare crows and you are good to go.  Plant whatever herb seeds you can.  Real money doesn’t come from those until you are level 29 and can do Harras without a reasonable chance they will die.

One more trip planting that will get you to 25.  Repeat again twice and you are to level 30, and can start doing fruit trees.  Start those at 27 if you pay for the gardener to watch them though.  3 more farming rounds or 8 apple trees   will be at 35, and ready for some serious cash making opportunity.

Thoughts on farming

Super compost costs 500gp, Ingredients can be had in bulk from the GE for 100gp eacy, and no requirements to make it.  Make it every round, if you don’t, then make normal compost every round.  Running out of buckets?  The RFD chest stocks them and Catherby has them in unlimited supply.  At a free 135 xp per area, that adds up fast, not to mention the higher yields it gives you for allotments and herbs.

Ask away if you have any questions, or pm me in game and I will give y ou the tour. – kamakiri88

Seed prices?

Posted in Uncategorized on March 1, 2009 by pizzamancer

torstol-graphAs an avid farmer, I am feeling the crunch of seed prices lately. It an easy jump to see the reason they are going up. The tool Leprechaun will now note your produce and grimy herbs for free at each plot, effectively eliminating bank stops for farming runs. This is an extra 10k xp per plot for high farmers, and at much cheaper prices and in less time than it takes to grow trees.

Watermelon seeds are rising like mad, and strawberries are in a close second. Surprisingly sweet corn hasn’t been affected at all, so there is still a pocket of profitability there. Grow sweet corn and sell the produce for cash. (6 seeds is 2868, and I average 50 sweetcorn per plot that sell instantly for 10900).

Herb seeds are on the rise as well, and you can see the demand from high level farmers, as Torstol seeds have risen over 145% in the past 30 days. Another interesting thing here is that Zammy Brews have followed the same demand curve. makes me wonder who is driving the demand for those as well.

Here are some numbers I was doing just as an FYI:

  • Torstol seed: 10,100
  • Average Yield: 7.3
  • Zammy brew: 1,151
  • Vial: 88
  • Jangerberry: 423
  • Cost per pot: 1,662
  • Loss per seed: 3,738

I plant 4 torstols and 1 snapdragon and come out ahead buying all vials and seconds. The occasional corn allotment is just a bonus.

89 Farming

Posted in Farming with tags on February 22, 2009 by pizzamancer

I just hit 89 farming, and have been doing a lot of thinking a lot of thinking about the farming skill.  Mainly vacillating over profits or xp.  Profits being snapdragon farming and xp being torstol farming.  Torstol is well over double the xp, and that really ads up.  A farming run with Snapdragon averages out to 3983 xp a trip, while torstol gives 9079 a trip.

Torstol on the other hand loses money when made into Zammy Brews, so I came up with the plan to plant 4 torstols and 1 snapdragon in My Arm’s plot.  That way I break even and still maximize my xp.

I also took some advice form high level farmers and started planting my allotments again.  I have been ignorimg them to focus on trees and herbs alone, but they really are some serious xp.  Two allotments of watermelons gets me 2900 xp (including the 15 super compost I make every round).  This costs a bit though.  Seeds cost 1758 for 6, and I sell super composts.  15 of them get me 7665gp at today’s relatively stable prices.  I value the other watermelon at 91gp each so I am only losing about 6k per field that I farm, but still it is a loss.

I need to think about the path I will take in farming.  To date it has been a profit center.  Always focusing on the high income herbs.  If I am ever to get that farming cape though I need to buckle down and focus on xp.

ps anyone know if watering plants has any effect on the yields?  As in if I have a nasturitum protecting my watermelons, would watering them give me more melons when they grow to maturity?

I finally got my Quest Cape Back

Posted in Uncategorized on February 18, 2009 by pizzamancer

I haven’t posted much this month, as I have been madly training to get the minimum levels for While Guthix Sleeps.  Like Dream Mentor this quest had a useless Attack and Strength level minimum.  I had to train str and att from 60 to 65 so I could get into the Warrior Guild (It requires a combined level of 130).  I didn’t even use the levels, and in the final battle, it doesn’t matter what your melee skills are anyway as they are boosted to 250.

I do wish I had know about that before.  I could have trained less Def, and then been able to keep my combat level at 85.  For those who don’t know, I did get my quest Points Cape at level 68.  I occasionally say 69, because the quest reward bumped me up a combat level, but I got the last quest I needed while still 68, so I use that # more often.

After all that training, I am now level 90.  I do enjoy a stroll through F2p though.  There, without summoning, I am level 83.  Many people still claim that I can’t have finished all quests, despite clearly wearing the quest cape and doing the emote, as my combat level is only 83.  Ah well.

With that goal aside, I will be getting back to more regular posting.  If you see Kamakiri88, my in-game alter ego, then say hi.

Are Video Games Bad For You?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on January 27, 2009 by pizzamancer

This came across my RSS today and I though you might be interested.  It is kind of off the beaten path of the RS Economist Blog, but the subject matter is interesting.  The original blog post that brought this to my attention is here and it is about a story from today’s Journal of Youth and Adolescence about how video games are bad for you.

The basic premise is that:

  • the more the students play video games, the worse their relationships are with friends and parents (although this effect is modest)
  • those who play video games daily smoke pot twice as much as other players and three times more than those who never play
  • young women who play often have lower self-esteem

Now I don’t know about you, but I think they got it backwards.  We can all agree that there is a positive correlation between each of the points listed above.  Where I have the problem is, I don’t see a causal relationship there.  I, infact, venture that the opposite is true.

If you don’t like your parents (16 year olds have hated their parents since well before James Dean), then the chances if you playing scrabble with the family are slim and none.  What else does that leave for social activities at home?  Clan chat.

Doing drugs and gaming?  This is a big one with lots of heavy opinions.  I will leave it alone except to day that there is a reason they call social drugs social drugs.

The last one here is a kicker.  How many female players do you know?  How many of them look like Cindy Crawford in your imagination?  My guess is that pretty much all of them do, the imagination is a good thing.  Women are in the minority in gaming and if you are a guy MMORPGing 20 hours a week, some female contact is great.  If in the default world a girl isn’t at the center of the popular clique (and rally who is, it is all a matter of perception), then you probably have a bit of a self esteem problem anyway, heck who in high school doesn’t have some self doublt once in a while.

In conclusion, there sure is a correlation here, but they did not establish causality at all.

Speculative Purchasing

Posted in Grand Exchange with tags , on January 22, 2009 by pizzamancer

Hey all.  Just a quick post here today.  I have given a strong buy rating to two items:

Mystic Mud Staff

Ring of Stone

Both of these are very undervalued for what they are, and have been trending down for the past month.  The Mystic mud staff should go back up to at least achieve parity with the less useful non-mystic Mud Battlestaff, so we can expect at least a 100k increase in the price.

The Ring of Stone has already increased by 100k since its low point, so grab those while you can, and expect them to go back to just below the December price of about 400-430k.  You can look forward to a 100k +/- 40k increase within the next 2 weeks.

Also, since Jages mentioned ash and it juumped to 9gp each, the bottom fell out of the ash market and they are onloy worth 2gp now, making them a great buy, but at the purcvhasing caps of 10,000 every 4 hours it is a long road to collecting them in a large enough quantity to make any money at all.

The Prayer Beast – Runescape Pures Part One

Posted in Pures with tags , on January 17, 2009 by pizzamancer

I have held this idea on the back burner for a long time now.  I blogged the idea last year in a foot note and finally got around to putting a few types together.  I have a few more types on my mind, and will try to post 2-3 a month, usually on Fridays.  Enjoy.

The Prayer Beast

Runescape’s Paladin?

I based this character type on a good friend of mine, I will call him Werewolf.  For a long time he ruled his small part of the wild as a Prayer Beast.  Dressed in his monk robes and carrying his granite maul, he was lethal.  This post will focus on that version of the Prayer Beast.

Required Skills

  • Str: 50
  • Att: 50
  • Def: 0
  • Prayer: 31

Those are the minimums you will need to be a serious threat in PvP fighting.  Some people may contest the prayer level.  Protect item is necessary at level 25, but why 31?  Ultimate strength.  Those few higher HP you knock off could mean the difference between a spawn in Lumby or a nice pay off for a hard day’s work.

Outfit:

  1. Ram Skull Helmet (Free after Rag and Bone Quest) > Iron Full
  2. Cape (any color) – 600gp
  3. Holy Symbol (137gp), Amulet of Strength
  4. Granite Maul – 130k
  5. Explorer’s Ring – Free after Lumby Achievement Diaries
  6. Monk Robe Top – Free from the Prayer Guild (535gp from GE)
  7. Anti-Dragon shield – Free from the king of Lumby (289gp from the GE)
  8. Monk Robe Bottom – Free from the Prayer Guild (485 from the GE)
  9. Safety Gloves – Stronghold of Player Safety
  10. Fighting Boots – Free from the Stronghold of Security

Total outfit cost:

About 150k.  You really should purchase extras of the things you can.  If you want to save some cash, then start Dragon Slayer, get your anti-dragon shield, drop it, get another, and repeat.  The same goes for monk robes, just wait until they spawn.

Substitutions:

You can swap out the Ram Skull helm for an iron full if you want.  They are cheap and easy to make, but why the Ram Skull?  It is an easy quest, and you get prayer xp from it.  Two things that are good for a Prayer Beast.

Carry a rune scimmy as well.  This will hit higher than the Granite Maul, as well as being twice as fast, then pull out the maul and use the Quick Smash spec to finish off your opponent.

Switch out the ammy for a Strength Amulet.  Your main ’strength’ is going to be strength, so adding every possible bonus you can is the key to getting a quick kill.

Inventory:

A decent PK food and  Zammy Brews.  At the cost of <250 per dose, they offer a str and att bonus equivalent to Super Att and Str at 1/10 the price, and prayer bonus.  They do have an HP and def penalty, but at 1 def, it doesn’t matter anyway so just gobble a fish to heal up after a shot and you are good to go.  You can also substitute a slot of food for a super def mix.  They heal well (12hp over 2 doses) at the same time as giving a bonus to your def, and they are cheap at 300 a shot.

Turbo Tip:

There isn’t a large supply of Zammy Brews or Super Def Mixes for sale on the GE.  They cost a lot to make, and sell for nothing, but they are great herblore XP.  Just ask in the GE for 85 herblore help, and most high levels will be happy to assist.

The Top 10 Best Rings of Runescape

Posted in Uncategorized on January 12, 2009 by pizzamancer

One style of blogging I have always enjoyed was the top 10 list. If this one is popular, I am actually thinking about a monthly top 10 list series, so after reading it leave a comment and let me know what you though.

While digging through information on rings for the previous post, I found a ton of info on the magical properties of some of the other rings around RS, and at the same time found no definitive list of the various rings that you could wear.  In the old days it was pretty easy.  You had the 4 basic rings, Saph – Diamond and Dragon Stone, and depending on what you were doing at the time you pretty much didn’t have much choice.  Enough with the nostalgia, on with the list:

10.  Beacon Ring - This ring is from the What Lies Below quest, and is freely replacable from Zaff in his Varrok Staff shop.  With a decent bonus and a low replacement cost this one eeks in as #10.

Bonus:  +2 Magic att, +1 Magic Def

9.  Ring of Stone - Yes, I know.  This ring is pretty useless, but hey!  It turns you into a rock.  How cool is that?

Bonus:  You get to be a rock!

8.  Pineapple Ring - Yes, you can’t wear this one, but it is a tasty treat that not only heals, but looks cool when dropped on the ground.

Bonus:  Heals 2

7.  Lunar Ring - This is the cheap man’s Seer ring.  With a replacement cost of 2,000gp, it is also very expendable.

Bonus: +2 Magic Att and Def.

6.  Ring of Fire - The coolest thing about this ring is the examine message, “It burns, burns, burns…”.  To get one you need 62 FM, and complete All Fired Up.

Bonus:  +2% FM xp.

5.  Ring of Charos - Although this ring has no stat bonus, it is extremely useful.  There is a long list of places you can use the ring to get something special, Just make sure it has been activated.

Bonus:  Too many to list, google it

4.  Archers Ring - This one makes the list, but only as the least of the great Fremennik Rings.  It has pretty bad cost performance, but as the only ring that offers a range bonus it ranks as a 4.  I am sure if rangers stopped killing mages, you might get more enchanted rings.

Bonus:  +4 Range Att and Def

3.  Warrior Ring - The weaker of the 2 combat rings, this one is far more cost effective, at about 1/10 the cost of its more desirable brother.  Well worth the investment if you like to carry a scimitar.

Bonus:  +4 Slash Att, +4 Slash Def

2.  Berserker Ring - A ring reputed to bring out a berserk fury in its wearer.  What to do the highest possible damage in the game?  This ring is for you.

Bonus:  +4 Strength, +4 Crush Def

1.  Seers Ring - You regulars know my penchant for all things magic related, so this one shouldn’t come as a surprise.  Down from it’s price in the millions, this ring is a must for the fighting mage.

Bonus:  +4 Magic Att and Def

Honorable Mention

Ring of Wealth – The original expensive ring.  This stayed at 100k for months, and I remember when I purchased my first one, thinking that it would be my ticket to riches.  What a rude awakening that was.

Ring of Slaying – The teles are convienient, but it is the name that gets this one into the honorable mention.  “Ring of Slaying”, yep, still like the sound of that.

Ring of Visibility – Pretty useless in and of itself, but you need one to get the ghostly robes, one of the best free items in the game.

And that rounds out my list.  Hoiw was it?
